Deck to Porch conversion

This page outlines the work that I did back in March of 2003.

One of the things that was not right about the deck was that it was built all the way to the property line...to the point where it was touching the neighbor's fence. Step one in the project was to trim back the deck to a more legal set-back from the property line. A chalk line was used to give me a guide to follow.

With the blade depth set to barely cut through the planks, I used a circular saw to follow the line. A crowbar was then used to pry up the deck planks to be discarded.

A reciprocating saw was then used to cut the beams down to a more manageable size. Looking at the picture below, you might notice some interesting things. First, one of the deck beams is nailed right into the fence. Second, some of the beams are actually galvanized steel I-Beams. Talk about overkill construction!

Here's another view that shows how the deck was framed:

Now that the deck was smaller, this vertical steel post was not needed. I tried to dig it out, but it was set firmly into a concrete footing.

The solution was to drill a hole in the beam and bolt a chain through the hole. We then brought out the engine "cherry picker" from the garage and plucked the post and much of the footing from the ground.

With the deck trimmed back, attention was turned to removing the concrete and cinderblock base for the steps. Much digging, pounding and prying was required to get all the masonry removed.

Months later, I got around to taking out this wooden section of the frame and welding in a steel beam to replace it. This made it so the deck had a steel perimeter frame that would provide the base for a porch.

And that's pretty much the way the deck sat until the Spring of 2007. Have a look at Part 2 of the project to see what happened next!
