Kitchen Update

The kitchen was functional, but dated looking. The yellow peel-and-stick vinyl tiles were dingy, and the paint really didn't go all that well with the rest of the condo. The stove and dishwasher were a bit crusty looking and needed to be replaced.

First, the old stove was removed and disposed of. The kickplate was removed from the dishwasher, and the fridge was moved to the living room. When the vinyl tiles were pulled up, it exposed a sheet of masonite underlayment.

The underlayment was then removed, exposing the plywood sub-floor. The dishwasher was also removed and discarded. To prep for new paint, all the walls and ceiling were washed with a strong solution of hot water and TSP (Tri-Sodium Phosphate) to remove grease residue. This was then followed by a rinse of clear water. When painting a kitchen, these steps are absolutely necessary to ensure that the fresh paint adheres properly.

Once prepped, a coat of Glidden semi-gloss was applied. Already, it was looking much better! With the paint taken care of, attention was turned to the flooring. I'm a big fan of the flexible "tape down" Sundial vinyl flooring made by Armstrong. With a completely gutted kitchen, it's very simple to throw in a sheet and trim it to fit. Since I did not intend to remove the base cabinets on this project, a paper pattern was made of the floor.

The sheet of vinyl had been on the truck for several days and had gotten a bit stiff and wavy. It was laid out in the living room and allowed to "relax" overnight in the warm condo. I stretched it as much as possible, and weighted down each corner with paint cans.

The next morning, the pattern was placed on the vinyl sheet and a rough outline was traced out. If you compare the picture above to the one below, you can see that most of the waviness had settled down.

The sheet is then dragged into the kitchen and positioned. The flaps correspond to the areas for the stove, fridge and dishwasher. Some people will shortcut the job and not install flooring under the stove or dishwasher, since you rarely see those areas. I prefer to go ahead and cover them. It doesn't really take that much more time to get it installed!

With the vinyl taped down with "Glas-Tac" tape and trimmed to fit, a new dishwasher and an almost new stove were installed. If you would like to see more about installing this type of flooring, have a look at the kitchen project from our last condo rehab.

I found the stove on craigslist, which is a free online classifieds site for many major metropolitan areas. In this case, the owners were simply upgrading to a smooth-surface stove, and sold us their existing one. Below is a picture of the stove in it's old home - in perfect condition. I estimate that I saved over $200 on this stove!

Now that the appliances were in, new base shoe was installed to finish the edges of the floor. The trim was then caulked and painted semi-gloss white to contrast against the beige walls.

The kitchen is now ready for cooking!
